Questions We Get Before the Phone Rings
Who Turns Up
We work out of 1401 St. Paul Ave in Tacoma, and the person who shows up at your door is someone who's seen the same hardware you've got. Most of the houses we're called to were built somewhere between 1962 and 2003, with a lot of that stock dating to around 1987 - which matters because a torsion spring setup from the late '80s isn't wired or balanced the same way a 2001 build is. We don't send a crew; we send one person with a truck stocked for the kind of doors this city actually has, not generic big-box parts that sort of fit.
We don't do new construction framing or structural carpentry - if your opening needs to be reframed or widened, that's a job for a contractor, and we'll tell you that straight instead of taking the work and doing it badly. What we do well is diagnosing and fixing the door that's already hanging in your garage.
If you're not sure whether what you're hearing is a spring, a cable, or a bent track, that's exactly the kind of call we want - most people can't tell the difference by sound alone, and neither could we without looking at it.
What We Actually Do
Broken torsion springs, snapped cables, bent tracks, off-track doors, openers that hum but don't lift, rollers that have worn down to the bearing - that's the bulk of the call list. Given the age spread of housing here (1962 to 2003, median around 1987), a lot of what we find is original hardware that's simply reached the end of its service life, not something that failed because of bad luck.
We also replace doors outright when a repair doesn't make sense - a panel that's rusted through, or a door so out of balance that patching it just means another call in six months. We'll say so if that's the better move financially, even though it's a bigger job for us.
One limitation worth knowing up front: we don't carry every opener brand's proprietary parts on the truck. Some circuit boards and remote modules have to be special-ordered, and that can mean a short wait on a specific repair even after we've diagnosed it. We'd rather tell you that before we start than surprise you with it halfway through.
Getting Hold of Us
Call (253) 210-4852. That's the fastest way to get a real answer about scheduling, not a form that sits in a queue.
When you call, it helps to know a few things before you pick up the phone: whether the door moves at all, whether you hear a motor running, whether a spring is visibly separated at the top of the door, and roughly how old the door is if you know it. None of that is required - we can usually figure it out over the phone or on site - but it cuts down on back-and-forth.
We're based at 1401 St. Paul Ave in Tacoma, which keeps most of the areas we cover within a short drive, so getting a truck to you usually isn't the bottleneck - scheduling around what else is on the board that day is.
Where We Work
We're centered in Tacoma and cover the close-in neighborhoods directly - Hilltop, New Tacoma, Central Tacoma, North End, South Tacoma, Eastside, and South End, all within about a 1 to 4 mile radius of our address. Beyond that we run out to Fircrest, University Place, Fife, and Waller around the 3 to 5 mile mark, then further to Midland, Milton, Lakewood, Summit, Parkland, Edgewood, Lakeland South, Steilacoom, and Fox Island in the 6 to 8 mile range.
Farther out, we also take calls in Gig Harbor, Artondale, Pacific, Algona, Lakeland North, Sumner, Spanaway, Vashon, Des Moines, Frederickson, South Hill, Anderson Island, DuPont, Normandy Park, Bonney Lake, Elk Plain, and SeaTac, roughly 9 to 15 miles from the shop. If you're not sure whether your address falls inside that range, call and ask - it's a quick answer and saves everyone a wasted trip.
Frequently asked questions
How old does a garage door have to be before parts get hard to find?
It depends more on the manufacturer than the age itself, but a lot of the doors we see in houses built in the 1980s and 90s use hardware that's no longer a straight swap. We carry common torsion spring sizes and standard track on the truck, but some opener boards from that era do need to be special-ordered.
Do you install new garage doors or just fix existing ones?
Both. We replace doors when a repair doesn't make financial sense anymore - a badly rusted panel, a door that's out of balance in a way that keeps breaking parts - and we'll tell you honestly which situation you're in before we start any work.
How far from Tacoma do you go for a service call?
We cover the city itself and areas out to roughly 15 miles, including Lakewood, Gig Harbor, Bonney Lake, and SeaTac. If your address is near the edge of that range, call (253) 210-4852 and ask directly rather than assuming either way.
My garage door opener runs but the door won't move. What's that?
Usually that's a broken cable, a disconnected trolley, or a stripped gear inside the opener itself - the motor can run fine while the mechanical link to the door has failed. It's not something to force by hand repeatedly; call and describe what you're hearing and seeing.
Do you work on all garage door opener brands?
We work on most of what's installed in homes in this area, but some opener brands use proprietary circuit boards or remote modules we don't keep in stock and have to order in. We'll tell you at diagnosis if that's the case rather than after we've started.
